Collagen for joints, muscle and skeletal system

Collagen for joints, muscle and skeletal system
Products containing active collagen peptides have long been marketed in the in the US and Europe. Clinical and preclinical studies show various positive effects on tendon flexibility, ligament stability, bone metabolism and muscle and bone integrity following the consumption of marine collagen peptides.

Collagen is a protein that is particularly important for the body's joints and is often referred to as the body's natural shock absorber. As much as 70 per cent of the cartilage in your joints is collagen and this protein is therefore a very important component in maintaining soft and supple joints.

With age, the body's own production of collagen decreases and many people can notice this in the knees and hips. For many, this can lead to challenges in daily activities and affect their quality of life.

A clinical study looked at the effects of protein supplementation in the form of type I collagen peptides in combination with strength training in older men with sarcopenia.
The results showed that compared to placebo, collagen supplementation in combination with strength training further improved body composition. This was achieved by increasing fat-free mass and muscle strength, as well as reducing fat mass (10).

Specific collagen peptides were shown to significantly increase the expression of collagen types I and III in fibroblasts from human ligaments and tendons. The study concluded that collagen peptides may therefore be an option for treating and preventing changes in ligaments and tendons.(8).

One study investigated the effect of specific marine collagen peptides on collagen expression, post-translational modification and mineralisation in an osteoblastic cell culture (bone-forming cells). Marine collagen peptides upregulated the gene expression of collagen-modifying enzymes and these effects led to increased collagen synthesis and positive effects on collagen quality and mineralisation of matrix in osteoblasts (9).
