Protein from lean fish has positive health effects

Clinical studies carried out by Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen in 2014 showed the positive health effects of a diet that included fish protein powder. It was shown that when 25 % of a daily protein intake came from lean fish that this had a positive effect on health since sugar tolerance and the quantity of inflamation-relieving fatty acids increased somewhat which in turn could make it easier to lose weight.
Summary of clinical studies of the effect of fish protein from lean fish:
Faster muscle growth; the previously mentioned study by HUH in 2014 showed an improved effect from cod protein on muscles.
Indirect weight loss
An increased tolerance to sugars, higher insulin resistance and increased amounts of inflamation-relieving fatty acids in the body could make it easier to lose weight. Poorly-functioning body processes can lead to obesity, e.g. many obese persons have a high insulin level and a low tolerance to sugars and since this hormone regulates the storage of fat in fatty tissue, the situation is made worse.
Better blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity
The study by HUH in 2014 also showed that blood sugar levels were lower after a meal of containing fish protein from lean fish (1) which in turn can mean better regulation and sensitivity to the «fat hormone» insulin.
Inflammation-calming effect
Studies show that a diet containing fish proteins increases the body’s own levels of polyunsaturated fats DHA and EPA as well as improving the composition of other inflamation-calming fatty acids (2).
Protection against diabetes type 2
Chronic inflammation is normal in cases of obesity, diabetes 2 and cardio-vascular disease. Taken daily, fish protein can help to reduce fatty acid related inflammation in the body.
Protection against cardio-vascular disease
The Scientific Committee of the Norwegian Food Safety Department (VKM) agree that there it is well documented by research that oily and lean fish protect against cardio-vascular disease (2). Omega-3 fatty oils (DHA and EPA) are known for their beneficial effect on the cardio-vascular system.
Reasearch shows that a diet rich in fish protein increases the body’s own composition of these fatty acids and improves the ratio between Omega-6 and Omega-3 (2).
